There has been a controversy surrounding the
issue of leadership. Many people, nowadays, have a tendency to believe that
leadership is a born-gift. However, many of the qualities that a leader should
have can be taught from outdoor activities and the internet.
First of all, it is obvious that many outdoor
activities, such as baseball, basketball, and soccer, allow people to gain a
sense of responsibility and respect for others, which are important features of
a leader. Such team sports require obligation such as managing their schedules
wisely, and cooperating with others. Through the consequences that arise from
negligent actions, they learn the importance of obligation. For example, my
youngest brother used to be lazy and selfish; he was far from a typical leader.
He has changed little by little after he joined a baseball team. He realized
that his laziness could negatively affect everyone. Naturally he became
punctual, played his part well, and even encouraged others who seemed to be
goofing around. He learned the hard way to be more responsible and tactful with
others. As a result, he learned the importance of responsibility and became a
responsible and charismatic captain of the baseball team. In this respect,
people can learn to be a leader by doing outdoor activities, especially team
sports.
Furthermore, it has become much easier to find
information making use of the online facilities. This means, in other words,
the internet has a wealth of quick facts and informative sources for people to
easily find tips for how to become a good leader. Previously, only people who
were endowed with leadership and those who had a good leader around them to
mimic their characteristics could become an outstanding leader. Thanks to the
internet, however, people have access to virtually unlimited amount of
information including know-hows and examples of remarkable leaders in history.
In the light of a recent tendency, most young generation gathers information
from social network services, such as Facebook and YouTube. They share a
variety of data through the effective use of those services. This eventually
provides them with the platform for dialogue and helps them become backed up
with a wider range of knowledge necessary for becoming an excellent leader.
This is all because, today, the internet increases the amount of information
available to people and promotes profitable communication. Thus, the
development of the internet in the contemporary society made it possible for
people to find information and teach each other about leadership.
In conclusion, I firmly
believe that any group of people, including introverts, who usually do not seem like a born leader, can teach
and train themselves to become a leader. All in all, the teachings from team
sports and the enormous amount of information online cannot be underestimated.
