In the lecture,
the lecturer argues that the shape of hammerhead sharks seems to not advantageous
for them which contradicts the assertion made in the reading passage that the
distinctive appearance of the sharks’ head has evolutional benefits.
First of all,
the lecturer contends that it is not true that the unique eye position of the
hammerhead sharks strengthens their vision. She says that it is only true when
they see objects which are located at a distant. Also, the eye position gives
the animal drawback which in which they are not able to identify preys or avoid
obstacles in front of them. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s argues argument that the head structure is responsible for great eye sights for the sharks.
Moreover, the
professor points out that there is no relation between hammerhead sharks’ head
structure and their sense of smell. This is because the other sharks, such as
pointed-head sharks can smell as well as the hammerhead sharks can do. In
addition, any study has ever found that the sharks smell better and faster than
other shark species. This counters the reading passage’s claim that the head
shape of hammerhead sharks lead to having better sense of smell than other
sharks.
The final point
made by the lecture is that, the fact that hammerhead sharks can turn their
head quickly due to the head shape is wrong. She states that a video which
recorded sharks movement showed that they did not use head for steering.
Instead, their flexible backbone is the real reason how they turn quickly. This
directly refutes the reading passage’s claim that the sharks’ ability of turn
direction quickly is attributed to the distinctive head structure.
