Certainly, a deep understanding of history plays a significant role in people's lives in the many of the places where they work and play. Some people might say that all university students should be required to take history courses no matter what their field of study is. However, in my opinion, forcing students to take history course regardless of their majors would not bring a good result in their lives. There are reasons as follows.
First and foremost, when students have to attend mandatory history classes in university, they will have less time for their field of study. Moreover, some students who are not good at history can receive bad grades and it can affect their future career since it can appear on their transcript which is the main criteria for job applying. Also, nowadays, large company want candidates with more practical skills, such as computer programming and accounting. In this context, it is hard to say students can benefit from spending time to memorize all the names of the kings and historical events. For example, when my sister was university student, she suffer physically and mentally from tight schedule and highly competitive environment. She was already busy with studying many of academic subjects which she need to take to graduate. However, her university announced that all students need to take 6 credits from history department from next semester. Even though her constant efforts, she got C from the ancient Japanese history class. Unfortunately, this lowered her overall GPA and she fail to apply her summer internship where she really wanted to work, just because she could not satisfy minimum qualification. On the other hand, her friend, John who is from another university, could focus on building his resume by adding related skills since his university encouraged students to specialize on their major. Consequently, he received more than five internship offers.
To sum up, taking history classes without consideration of students' aptitude and interest can have negative impact on students' school life.
