Some
people might think that if their country meets economics crisis, the government
should spend less money on schools, public libraries or public transit while
others do not think like the way. If I have to choose one among them, I would
say that the government has to reduce its budget on military. There are a
couple of reasons and examples as follows.
To
begin with, citizens' lives can be affected more significantly and
negatively if the government spend less money on schools, public libraries or
public transit. This is because they are deeply related to one's ordinary life
in the community, especially the quality of life. Therefore, people in the
community would be uncomfortable and unsatisfied with inconvenience of
using them. In this sense, other another kinds of social problems can come
up, which would result in unexpected and additional social cost
eventually. There was a survey conducted by a group of sociology
majors in Seoul National University with randomly chosen citizens as
respondents. The purpose of the poll was to understand the consensus view about
the importance of the government's investment on schools, public libraries,
public transit and military. The majority of respondents ranked schools, public
libraries and public transit over military. An overwhelming 70% of the people
responded that spending money on military is the least important among them.
The reason for this was that they thought it did not have such a notable and
positive impact on their lives.
On top
of that, wars is less likely to occur in this world, which makes it less
necessary for the government to spend money on military. For many decades,
there have been few wars in the world. Moreover, it seems that most governments
try hard to show themselves that they are supposed to solve problems by
negotiating rather than exerting physical forces. According to an author, Rover Kim
who is an outstanding expert in the field of international politics, said
in his book, International conflicts, that it gets harder to have a war
as the meaning of peace making has been emphasized more and more among not only
the governments but also people around the world. Ggiven that the point of
his argument, inter-governmental physical conflicts would not break out easily
due to the trend.
To
sum up, spending money on school, public libraries and public transportations
is still necessary when the government has ve a severe financial problem
as they account for great parts of citizens' lives. Moreover,
wars are less likely to arise compared to the past so it does not seem to be
necessary for the government to expend budget on military. In this regard, I
firmly believe that when the government faces economic crisis, spending less
money on military is the most rational way to solve the problem.
