When it comes to development of science field, there
are lots of arguments about supporting scientific research in most of
countries. Some people might think that the government should support scientific
research, even if it does not have any practical purpose. However, in my
opinion, it is not correct proposition. I personally believed that the government
should support them, only if scientific research has certain goal, because, if scientific
organizations that awarded support from government have not any idea, there is
no meaning about support.
To begin with, the support has a variety of means
such as holding a festival for making interest from people and financial aid.
However, all of these things require money consistently. To be specific, if
government holds a festival to concentrate people’s interest, it also needs
money to rent a hall in which place will be held and buying some stuff for
festival. The most important thing is that the money used by the government is
from citizens’ tax by their obligation. Thus, the budget of government should
be used carefully. Although, the festival made succeed and people begin to have
interest in science field, if the institution does not have specific their own
goal, it has no meaning. One incident in my country, South Korea, can prove my
point. I will give you this as an example. The government used their budget as
3 billion won (Korean money), planning to make a Future Technology Fair in 2002.
It seemed like that the fair was successful because over twenty thousand people
like students and parents attended the fair. In addition, over 4,000 job
seekers applied for technology industry. However, after 2 year, an overwhelming
87% of companies are collapsed and employees were fired from their company
because, when the festival was held, it was an initial step to start a business
of Future Technology so there is no precise purpose in companies that
participated in that fair. After this situation, people criticized that the government
did not inspect companies, before holding a festival. Ultimately, the
implementation of the government was a big failure. This example shows us how important
the government’s implementation is.
To sum up, if the government didn’t prepare for doing pre-examination for supporting scientific research, it could make confuse their
society in economic and individual life aspects. In this sense, I strongly
believe that the government should not support scientific research when they
don’t have practical purpose.
