The reading and the lecture both talk about
Etruscan. In the reading passage there is ample support for the author’s claim
that there is a growing agreement that the Etruscans migrated from Turkey.
However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to
the author’s point.
Firstly, the reading passage states that
genetic markers on gravesites show that the Etruscans have Turkish roots. On
the contrary, professor in the lecture disagrees with this statement. She argues
that a study that relies upon DNA is hard to believe. The DNA was from thousands
of years ago, so it must have been damaged. Also, considering the number of people
who could touch the bones at archaeological site, it is likely that DNA was
contaminated.
Secondly, in the reading, the author claims
that the Etruscan language indicates that they came from Turkey. In contrast,
professor from listening makes an opposing point to this claim. The point is
that it is not proven that the Etruscan language is related to Turkish ones. In
fact, different languages have similar alphabets, so the similarity between the
alphabets is not a conclusive link to connect Etruscan to Turkish language.
Actually it is the only surviving member of its language family.
Finally, the reading goes on to say that the
Turks and the Etruscans share funerary practices such as cremation and storing
ashes in urns. However, the speaker in the lecture contradicts this statement,
arguing that there is no reason to assume connection between the funerary
practices of Etruscans and of ancient Turkey. Cremation had gone for thousands
of years in northern Italy before the Etruscans were even around. This means
that the Etruscans were simply the successor to these tradition.
