■ Question Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard, explaining how they cast doubt on the points made in the reading
▶ Topic :
Origin of Scotland forts
▶ Your Answer :
The reading passage contends that the origin of forts with vitrified stones can be fully explained by three theories. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict
the reading passage’s argument.
Firstly, the lecturer argues that it is unlikely that signal fires were the reason of the vitrification. This is because the signal fires were placed in just a few places and fixed, which means vitrification occured in only a few areas. However, the areas were all vitrified. This casts doubt on the reading passage that signal fires resulted in vitrification.
Secondly, according to the lecturer, it is difficult to say that lightning is a possible reason for vitrification. The structure has a very large size that over and over lightnings would be needed. Moreover, the wall’s condition is wear and tear, which is not the a surprise surprising fact because the wall was built in Iron Age. This counters the reading passage that the vitrification is caused by lightning.
Thirdly, the final remark of the lecturer is that it is doubtful to say that there was no evidence that volcano had existed. That is, the constructors should import volcanic stones from the vast distance. This seems like nonsense because of the heavy height. Therefore, they might use their local stones. This contradicts the reading passage that the forts were consisted of volcanic rocks.
