Some people think that the news media is surely a reliable source of unbiased information. Undoubtedly, in a democratic society, the media should provide fair information to the public. However, I strongly believe that the news media often fails to show impartial views for the following two subsequent reasons. First, the media closely reflects its own opinions. All media companies have their own perspectives such as a Democratic viewpoint or a Republican one. When media companies deal with certain issues, they try to find evidence which support their viewpoints and neglect one that oppose to their wills. For example, consider a situation that public dissatisfaction skyrockets and some kinds of tumults come. In that situation, some media companies would put pictures of a citizen beaten by a policeman, illustrating the brutality of the government power. On the contrary, other companies would put pictures of a policeman beaten by a citizen and try to criticize the violence of the public. This example shows that media companies always try to illustrate their own perspectives, which can be regarded as partial. Moreover, the media often follows the will of certain interest groups. These kinds of groups frequently try to lobby the media and consequently, the media tends to provide biased information which is beneficial to only these groups. For instance, although many people have been killed by a gun in America, true restriction of the use of guns in that nation is unpromising because many interest groups related to weapon business put pressure on the media so that it cannot drive the public or the government to support the restriction. This shows that the media often becomes a proponent of only a small proportion of people and fails to provide impartial viewpoints to the public. In conclusion, I strongly assert that the news media is nowadays not a credible source of impartial information. |
