▶ Your Answer :
In the reading
passage, there is ample support to the author’s claim that GM crops are
beneficial to humans. However, in the lecture, the professor gives several
reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s point.
First,
the professor contends that GM crops are not good solution to solve the
starvation problems. Actually, the foods are unequally distributed in this
world and this is the real problem. Thus, even if GM crops are made a lot, they
still do not reach the hungry people. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s
claim that the problem of world hunger can be solved by cultivating GM crops by
increasing crop yields.
Next,
the professor insists that GM crops actually make the price of food more
costly. The companies which make GM crops want profits. Also, while making GM
crops, the seeds a great amount of water, so their prices go up and become
costly. This counters the reading passage’s assertion that GM crops play a role
in reducing the price of due to the stability of supply.
Finally,
the professor argues that vaccines which are made by GM crops have the same
problems compared to the past vaccines. Usually bananas and tomatoes are used
to make vaccines, and these vaccines quickly go bad so they have to maintain
cool temperature. For this reason, they have a difficulty in storing and
transporting. Hence, it is hard to give vaccines to people in developing
countries. This refutes the reading passage’s suggestion that vaccines from GM
crops are more available than earlier ones since they can easily store and
ship.
