Some people might think that it is more
important to keep old friends than to make new ones. They may have their own
reasons to support their point of view. If I were asked to choose one, I would say
that it is more importance to make new friends than to keep ones. There are
several reasons as follows.
First and foremost, when you make new friends,
you can learn how to mingle with people from different backgrounds. It exposes you
to different lifestyles, customs, and cultures. Such exposure is likely to help
you to acknowledge that different values exist, to understand this diversity
and to ultimately be comfortable with it.
For example, when I was in college, I saw
one of my classmates from Ethiopia eating his meal with bare hands. I felt very
uncomfortable by his behavior because it was my first time seeing someone like
that. I kept my distance away from him. However, when I started working in a
company and spent time with some of my co-workers whom are African, I got used
to this cultural difference. I realized that we just ha different eating styles.
In fact, we had a lot in common in a way that we all cared about our family and
friends, were committed to relationships and got easily hurt by what others said.
I no longer feel awkward and can become friends with them. If I had not made
friends with my African co-workers, I would still have biased perspectives and
still be rude to people with other cultures. Making new friends made me a
better person then before.
Secondly, making new friends can make you smarter
in various fields. People who are already friends with you are likely to be in the
same work fields. This because it is general for people to make friends in their
workplace or classes. For example, in university when people choose their major,
it restricts your perspectives, knowledge, time, and people you cope with, which
lasts about four years in average. However, if you make new friends in other fields,
you can broaden your horizons of knowledge by talking and making emotional
bonds with them. As a result, these widened knowledges can help you with your realistic
problems such as getting a job or getting a certificate of qualifications you need
to take.
To sum up, I strongly believe that the
advantages of making new friends far outweigh those of keeping old ones for the
reasons I have mentioned above. All in all, the importance making new friends
cannot be overestimated in life. |
