Education has always been an important part of one's life. A person's career, pay, and sometimes even life hinge on his or her educational level. So many parents are concerned with their children's schoolwork so their children could enter a prestigious university. But do the parents get involved more in their children's education than before? I'd say "yes" very confidently based on the recent upswing in private education market and dwindling fertility rate. To begin with, private education market is burgeoning in recent years. Young students go to private institute after school for further studying. Though they want to rest at home, parents are forcing them to study more. Let's take a look at a case in Gangnam in Seoul. Every night at 10p.m., on the so-called 'private institute street', cars are pulled over endlessly to pick up students who finished studying in their private institute. This trend was reported through the media and words like 'helicopter mom', 'Gangnam mom' are being coined. Whether the students are in rich or poor family, parents make it a rule to enroll their children in private institutes for deeper studying. On top of that, newly-wedded couples are having less babies compared to the past. They concentrate on just one or two children and want to raise them to be a perfect person in society. For instance, one of my cousins was married a few month ago and he told me he's going to have just one baby because it's getting harder to educate children in this pierce competition. He told me he could afford the high private education expenses just for one child and didn't want to compromise it. He said all of his friends are on the same page. To sum up, parents these days don't hesitate to spend money for their children's education and pay close attention to their small number of children. In this regard, I maintain that parents in recent years have a greater level of involvement in the education of their children than in the past. |
