▶ Your Answer :
Recently, the word ‘Retro’ can be seen in
daily magazines or TV shows. Maybe this implies that many people are missing
old fashion and analogue items or the past itself. However, I am sure that life
today is easier and more comfortable than when our grandparents were young.
Technical developments and digital world allow us to contact others who live
far away, save time to move for long distances and be cured from illnesses.
First of all, people can keep in touch with
family or friends who live in other countries. These days, there are many
contents to contact immediately with other people not only with emails, also
with Social Network System or mobile messengers. When I traveled to Italy last year, there was a
huge earthquake in northern region. Since I was in southern area at that time,
I was not in a danger. So, with my smart phone, I could notify my family in Korea that I am safe from the disaster. Moreover,
web conference system is also one of benefits from modern technology in this
COVID-19 pandemic.
In
addition, compared to the past, it takes much shorter time to move to other countries.
When my grandparents were young, there were less transportations than now.
High-speed train, aviation, even automobile which is almost an essential
vehicle today were scarce about that time. It might took at least several weeks
or months to transfer products oversee. Owing to these transportations, it is
more convenient to travel the world and adopt foreign cultures.
Last
but not least, medical technology make us feel more comfortable from pain. For
those who are very old or very young, even a minor illness is liable to cause
fatal damage. Although, the advances in medical technology help to forestall
these problems. Therapies for serious illnesses such as cancer are widely
introduced in the medical world as well, there is hope that it can also be
cured in people who are suffering from severe diseases. Expended average life
span supports this fact. Therefore, they do not have to be anxious about dying
in agony.
In
summary, I believe that life during my
grandparents’ generation was far more challenging and less comfortable than
today. They could not take advantages of modern technology such as the
computer, smartphone or any home appliances. Plus, it was not easy for them to
recover from a serious illness in the past. For those reasons I mentioned
above, I feel lucky to live in modern times.
