Hair are you? Good? Hair do you do? You heard it right, I said ‘hair’.
Today, I’d like to walk you through how ‘hair’ influenced my life…and the way I see it.
Hair are you doing, Jiyeon?
If you asked me 10 years ago, I would just burst into tears.
“I’m innocent! I hate my curly hair too!”
I don’t know since when it was like that, but my balloon-like curly hair stood out
amid the same-looking girls in school uniforms.
Once I was slapped by a teacher near the school entrance,
“What’s this! What did you do to your hair!”
Everyone was looking at me, my mind went blank, I murmured
‘I am a hard-working student, far from making any trouble, and why is this happening
to me?’
The very next day, I got a Korean Magic Straight perm. Period. I couldn’t bear the stinky smell of ultra-straightening shampoo – but I loathed being punished for my ultra-curly hair
again.
Hair are you doing, Jiyeon?
If you asked me 5 years ago, I would give a deep sigh.
“Well, no, my curly hair got worse.”
I do know since when it was like this, damaged and thin, for I didn’t go a year without
getting a magic perm – plus without experiencing coursework stress.
Once in a year-end party, everyone got to dress up in costumes including me and other
interns.
“Who’s this! What did you do to your hair?”
Everyone agreed I looked totally extraordinary in an ordinary hair wig. Believe me, all I
wore was nothing but a long, straight wig.
The very next day, I posted my “extraordinary looks” on Facebook. Never had I received so many likes and comments in my life - and ever since I envied K-drama actresses with long
straight hair.
Ladies and gentlemen, Hair do you feel about the way my “hair” influenced my life?
I’ve witnessed I’m not alone in that regard. I’ve seen peers and seniors getting their hair done to look professional. I’ve seen aunties and uncles getting their hair dyed to look young – or even wear one.
Hair are you doing, everyone?
Research has it, hair losses are commonplace now – both male and female, as early as in their 30s. Reasons vary from irregular eating routines, fatigue to unhealthy diets – which
couldn’t get any worse in this prolonged covid-19 era.
But what the majority seeks is how to make their hair “look” good, not how to make their
hair good.
It’s a worn-out cliché,
“Don’t judge a book by its cover,”
Yet we can’t help but walk on eggshells because we are often judged by our hair, the cover
sitting on top of our head.
Still, now that Year 2021 is just around the corner, why don’t we look back on hair have we been, and make new year’s resolutions on hair are we going to take care of ourselves?
Thank you.
