Why do you think independent creators or one-person media platforms, including YouTube and AfreecaTV, are so popular these days? What impact will they have on our society in the future?
One video from YouTube can reach up to millions of viewers if it is created with creativity and entertainment. I think there are three reasons why independent creators or one-person media platforms are so popular these days. The three reasons are the following: accessibility, uniqueness, and reality. Through those reasons, I believe that it will become even more popular from today. I also believe that there will be a positive impact, where people will be able to enjoy more in the future; however, I also believe that there will be a negative impact on our society, where people will create videos and photos just for a show.
First, YouTube and AfreecaTV are easily accessible to anyone in the world. It is accessible because an ordinary person can upload his own video to share his lifestyle and many other interesting things with the world. It is not only easy to access in sharing the videos, but it is also easy to view the videos that had been uploaded. For example, if a Singaporean uploads a video about his own country, and an American is interested in moving to Singapore, he is able to easily access through the YouTube data to see the glimpse of what Singapore will be like. Knowing that everyone has the access to share their videos, people will become more interested to upload more videos. Knowing that everyone can access to view the videos, people will become more interested to look into the different materials that had been uploaded.
Second, YouTube and AfreecaTV are unique because there are so many creative people around the world with so many different ideas. If people are able to upload their videos with their own concepts, then they can create unique videos with creativity that others can enjoy. People are always craving for more creativity and uniqueness, and there are so many talented people around the world. YouTube and AfreecaTV present different contents out of the box, showing uniqueness that people want to pursue.
Last, YouTube and AfreecaTV are easily accessible and unique, yet realistic. All the programs that are created by the company and other TV programs are fashioned in a way that has been framed, while YouTube and AfreecaTV provide the realistic lifestyle and an ordinary lifestyle, where people can relate more. When you see the shocking videos that are called “Mukbang”, You see an ordinary person eating real food in a normal setting, yet just a lot. I think YouTube and AfreecaTV provide more realistic concepts and scenes in an interesting and eye-catching way. This is why I think one-person platforms are so popular today.
I believe that there will be a positive impact on the society in the future. The positive impact will be that people can be encouraged and entertained from other people’s lives. For example, when some people are down, they can look into interesting videos that can uplift them. One-person platform can help the society through encouraging and entertaining people.
Although I believe that there will be a positive impact on the society, I also believe that there will be a negative impact on the society. Through the videos, people can be exaggerating that they can present something unreal to be real. For example, people can show on the photos and videos as if they are really happy when they are not. People might only be too focused on the amount of viewers that they can be pretending to present something as real when it is not.
Therefore, I would say that one-person platform is so famous today for three reasons, and those reasons are the following: anyone can access easily, anyone can create uniquely, and anyone can present realistically. YouTube and AfreecaTV has provided many resources and materials for people to enjoy and relate. In the future, I believe that there will be positive impact on the society, providing more entertainment and encouragement. I also believe that there will be a negative impact on the society, resulting in people presenting to the world the unreal things as something true and real.
